MANUEL BAUTISTA

 

Venezolano por naturalización, el doctor Manuel Bautista nació en Bogotá, Colombia, el 20 de mayo de 1968. Se graduó de licenciado en Física en la Universidad Simón Bolívar, en 1990 y obtuvo el doctorado en Astronomía, en 1997, otorgado por la Universidad del Estado de Ohio, EE.UU. Desde entonces ha tenido posiciones como “Faculty Research Associate” de la Universidad de Maryland y “Senior Research Associate” en el Gordon Space Flight Center de la NASA. Actualmente es Investigador Asociado III del Centro de Física del Instituto Venezolano de Investigaciones Científicas (IVIC).

El doctor Bautista ha dedicado sus esfuerzos al estudio de espectros atómicos de plasmas astronómicos y de laboratorio. Entre sus logros de mayor impacto está el haber desarrollado, junto a T. Kallman, un programa computacional y la base de datos atómicos XSTAR v.2 para el modelaje de espectros de plasma fotoionizados, herramienta utilizada por la NASA para el análisis de espectros de rayos X de los telescopios espaciales Chandra y XMM, actualmente en funcionamiento y los telescopios Astro-E2 y Constalation-X, a ser puestos en órbita en los próximos años. Premio Lorenzo Mendoza Fleury. 2005.
