Alberto C. Vollmer is a Venezuelan businessman that –apart from being the head of Santa Teresa Rum Factory, INC- is also the leader of an important project of social traits called The Alcatraz Project, a non-government organization that has been selected as a study-case by the Social Enterprising Knowledge Network (SEKN).
Despite all his wealth and social prestige, Mr. Vollmer is not a traditional aristocrat at all. In February 2000 almost 500 families invaded his lands and established compounds. Instead of hiring gunmen to scare them away, Mr. Vollmer presented a proposal: “I will allow you to invade my lands if you allow me to invade your minds.”
His work has raised recognition among the conflict-solving experts form Harvard University and his methods are currently being studied at business schools in Latin America. He feverishly collaborates with the Young Entrepreneur Association (AJE).
Vollmer is a businessman who openly expresses the importance of investing in social matters so society and companies can progress along. He clearly states his conviction by saying that new businesspeople are obliged to get involved with social matters in order to reverse underdevelopment in countries like Venezuela.
